Care Guide
Washing and caring for your cloth nappies Washing Guidelines: Before First Use All natural fibres need prewashing a minimum of 3 times before use to achieve full absorbency. There is no need to dry between washes. Powder is only necessary for the first wash. Any other fibres need prewashing once to
remove any manufacturing residue. Nappies are fine to be washed at 40c –
give them a blast at 60c once in a while to freshen them up. Only use approx ¼ of the recommended
amount of soap powder – any more will leave a residue build up which will make
your nappies smell of ammonia (and can result in a sore bottom). Soapnuts are excellent for washing nappies with - no powder build up, and leaves them very soft. DO NOT use fabric conditioner – it will leave a
coating on the fibres and make them less absorbent. An extra rinse after
washing is helpful for removing build up and is worth doing every few washes if
not every wash. See the care label on the nappy/wrap for
tumble drying advice, but remember that
any high temperatures will give them a slightly shorter lifespan. Try not to dry bamboo nappies on
radiators all of the time — give them a break on the line, airer, or tumble
dryer to give the fibres a chance to refluff Softening Nappies White vinegar in the wash will help
soften the nappies and also help with any ammonia smell.
Storing Your Nappies Dry pailing is the easiest method — just
drop solid waste into the toilet, place the dirty nappy in a lidded bucket, and wash as usual (a prewash
cycle helps). Adding a few drops of tea
tree oil and lavender can help make it smell fresher. |
